  • Dad's death

    When Nelson was 12 years old, his father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa, died. This was also the time he became interrested in becoming a freedom fighter.

    School

    Nelson atended primary school in Qunu, and that's where he got his name, Nelson. He completed his junior certificate and moved on to college. Mandela was studying arts at the university college of Fort Hare, but he didn't complete college because he was expelled for joining a protest. But when he came home, the king was furios, and said they had to go back to Fort Hare, but they ran off and worked as a mine security officer. 2 years later he came back to Fort Hare for his graduation.

    Political history begins

    Mandela was increasely involved with politics, joined the African National Congress in 1942, when he helped the ANC Youth Leauge (ANCYL) in 1944. Mandela rose through the ranks while in ANCYL, but the ANC adopted a more radical mass-based policy, the Programme of Action, in 1949

    Meanwhile, Nelson began studying for an LLB at the university of Witwatersrand. But he was a poor student, so he left the school without graduating. He also started studying at the university of London after his imprisoment, but he also didn't complete that degree. In the last months of his imprisoment, Nelson obtained a LLB at the university of South Africa. He graduated in absentia at a ceremony at Cape Town.

    In 1944 he married Walter Sisulu’s cousin, Evelyn Mase, a nurse. They had two sons, Madiba Thembekile "Thembi" and Makgatho, and two daughters both called Makaziwe, the first of whom died in infancy. He and his wife divorced in 1958.

    Threason trial

    In 1956 the south african police run a countrywide police swoop, and arestetet a hole load of people it was men and women of all races. The trials ended with the last 28 people, including Mandela, were acquitted on 29 march 1961.

    All-in Africa Conference

    Days before the end of the Treason Trial, Mandela travelled to Pietermaritzburg to speak at the All-in Africa Conference, which resolved that he should write to Prime Minister Verwoerd requesting a national convention on a non-racial constitution, and to warn that should he not agree there would be a national strike against South Africa becoming a republic.
    After the acquitted, mandela and began planning the national strikes on the 29, 30 and 31 og march 196.

    Sentence to life imprisonment

    The police raided Liliesleaf, a secret hideout in Rivonia, Johannesburg, used by ANC and Communist Party activists, and several of his comrades were arrested.
    MAndela and 10 other was on trial for sabotage. While fasing death penalty Mandela's speech to the judge helped reduce the sentence to life imprisonment.
    He served 18 years at Robben island, after he was moved to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town where he served 6 years.

    Release from prison

    On 12 August 1988 he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. After 3 months in two different hospitals he was transferred on 7 December 1988 to a house at Victor Verster Prison near Paarl where he spent his last 14 month of imprisonment. He was released on Sunday 11 February 1990, nine days after the unbanning of the ANC and the PAC and nearly four months after the release of his remaining Rivonia comrades.

    President

    On the 10 May 1994 Nelson was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On his 80th birthday in 1998 he married Graça Machel, his third wife.
    True to his promise, Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President. He continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund he set up in 1995 and established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
