    The goal of the policy was to was to end the status of indians as wards. to grant them the rights of American citizens and move them into main stream communties. Between 1952 and 1967 some 200,00 Indians resettled in that way. Although they resettled the government failed to allocate resources and most stayed in poverty just as poor.

    Suffered highest unemployment rates in the nation, average income less than 1/2 of white Americans, suffered badly from poor health, lots of alcoholism and tuberculosis

    AIM Anthem
    Aim was founded in Minnestoa in July of 1968. Called for the renewal of traditional cultures, economic independence, and better education for indian culture. Most civil rights groups were non violent but AIM used a little more force. Staged protests were led to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in DC and took over the headquarters. Officials were so embarressed they agreed to make change as long as the riot was ended.

    The U.S. government tried to help the Native American people by passing laws that gave them a better chance for education and healthcare. In 1969 the National Indian Education Association was formed to improve education accsess. In 1971 The Native American Rights Found provided legal services for Native Americans.
  • Occupation of Alcatraz

    Occupation of Alcatraz
    1969- large group of Native Americans try to reclaim the island of Alcatraz which was previously used as a federal prison. The native occupation lasted 18 months until United States Marshalls removed the group by force. This occupation drew national attention to the plight of the Native American tribes. As a result New Mexico gives the Natives 48,000 acres of land and tribes in states Washington, Maine, and Connecticut recieved plots of land.

    Congress passed laws to enhance education, healthcare, and voting rights for Native Americans. Fritz Schodler lead the New Native American Art movement which depicted Native American art in new life.
