"Nation at Risk"

  • Articles of Confederation ratified

    The Articles of Confederation established the first government of the United States. They were established after we declared independence from Great Britain. I believe this strengthened our nation. The Articles may not have worked but it was a starting point for America, it got us on our feet until we could make something better.
  • Shay's Rebellion

    It had been caused by the harsh economic conditions which affected the Massachusetts farmers. I believe that Shay's Rebellion weakened the nation which then caused people to realize that the Articles of Confederaion didn't work and that they needed something new.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    This was the first organized territory of the United States. It included lands south of the Great Lakes, north and west of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River. This definitely benefited the United States because we were growing.
  • Constitution ratified

    The Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It set up our government into 3 branches; the Legislative, the Executive, and the Judicial. It fixed the Articles of Confederation. This strengthened the nation because it set up the way our government is run today.
  • Washington Inaugurated

    George Washington was the first president of the United States. He set precedents for the future presidents. This strengthened the nation because Washington definitely helped the United States and helped shape the way our country is today.
  • Judiciary Act of 1789

    The Judiciary Act of 1789 set up the first Judiciary Branch of the United States. This strengthened the nation because it set a precedent for the U.S.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    The Whiskey Rebellion ended in 1974. The government had put in a new tax which effected farmers. Farmers tried to rebel but with the new Constitution in place, the rebellion didn't go in favor of the farmers. This rebellion proved that the Constitution worked.
  • Jay's Treaty

    Jay's Treaty was put in place to keep the United States out of war. This strengthened the nation at the time because it didn't get us involved in the problems with France and Great Britain.
  • Pinckney Treaty

    Pinkckney's Treaty gave the U.S rights to the Mississippi River, New Orleans Port and West Florida. It basically was a friendship agreement between the United States and Spain. This benefited us because we were growing and getting stronger.
  • XYZ Affair

    The XYZ Affair started in 1797 and ended in 1798 and had to do with French representatives being sent to the U.S to bribe us. This was a huge insult to the United States. This almost put our nation at risk because we were weak and France put us in a difficult position.
  • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

    The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions happened in 1798 and 1799. This declared the Alien and Sedition Acts unconstitutional. This strengthened the nation because it didn't limit the freedom of speech we have.
  • Alien and Sedition Acts

    The Alien and Sedition Acts basically restricted the freedom of speech. John Adams passed this in July but it was later removed by President Jefferson. These put our nation at risk because it restricted one of our freedoms as Americans.
  • Marbury v. Madison

    This implemented Judicial Review which allows the Supreme Court of the United States to decide whether a law is unconstitutional or not. This strengthened the nation because it set a precedent for the rest of the years to come which benefits the citizens of the U.S.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase expanded the United States. We paid $50 million for it which doubled the size of the U.S. We purchased it from France. This strengthened the nation because we were growing and getting stronger.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    The Lewis and Clark Expedition happened after the Louisiana Purchase. Thomas Jefferson sent out a few men to explore all the new land. The journey lasted from May 1804 to September 1806. This strengthened the nation because we figured out how much land we actually had.
  • Chesapeake Incident

    This was one of the biggest international incident that happened during the American Civil War. It almost brought the North to war with Great Britain. This put our nation at risk because we tried our best to keep neutral and this threatened that.
  • Hartford Convention

    The Hartford Convention was a collection of meetings where Federalists met to discuss the grievances about the War of 1812. This almost put our nation at risk because it was separating the nation with political parties.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This was a peace treaty that ended the war of 1812. This strengthened the nation because it put us out of war and it resolved any conflicts.
