I started off really slow when it came to reading while others were more advanced. I started off by reading site cards throughout my days at school, and at home with my parents as homework during my whole 1st grade year which was around 2008.
-
In my 1st grade year, my dad started reading with me, and I was learning site words at school every day since I was behind in my reading development.
-
After several months of learning site words and practicing everyday reading with my dad, I was finally able to test my knowledge and read a full picture book without being corrected.
-
Likewise, with learning how to comprehend what I read, It took a lot of practice to really listen and pay attention to the details that I was reading. My whole second grade year and even into third grade, I was able to practice with my teacher different ways to understand the context of the passage.

Throughout the rest of Elementary School and into Middle School, in my English classes, we would work on a program called lexia reading to which we would be assigned different leveled reading and be tested on the material that we were reading about and each time we passed, our lexile levels would increase.
-
When I was in High School, my English instructors were now requiring us to write and read multiple high leveled reading levels and being able to present those materials to fellow classmates. This process took almost my entire freshman year of high school to experience.
-
Throughout my high school experience, I had teachers there to help and support throughout the process, while in college, you are supposed to know everything yourself and not much detail will be told other than the material instructions.
