    Toddler Years
I remember that one of my parents would read to me every single night. I did not go to bed without a bedtime story. My favorite story, and the one that I memorized by age 3 was "The Little Red Caboose." I could recite this story in my slee
  • "She Can Read!"

    "She Can Read!"
At some point after starting at Page's Preschool, I figured out how to sound out words. My mom said when I was 4, she could hear me talking to myself in the other room. When she came in to check on me, I was reading a newspaper. She claims that I wasn't old enough to understand what I was reading, but I was stringing sounds together to make words.
  • The Letter People

    The Letter People
I looked forward to our reading and grammar lessons in Mrs. Sorenson's Kindergarten class. She taught phonics using the Letter People. There was a letter person for each week, with cooresponding books to read. For some reason, I remember Mr. M the most.
  • 1st Grade

    1st Grade
When I was in 1st grade, I read 2 grades above my reading level. I remember being sent to the corner table to read alone while Ms. Conyers taught the rest of the class. I was told to pull books that were 3.7, read them, and answer the questions at the back of the book. I hated not being a part of the class. I don't remember if I complained to the teacher, or my parents, but I was eventually allowed to sit with the whole class again. After that, I did not enjoy reading as much as I had.
  • Where The Red Fern Grows

    Where The Red Fern Grows
in the 3rd grade I remember our class reading "Where the Red Fern Grows." I remember our teacher, Mr. Dalebout, reading it aloud and crying while he read. I had never experienced an emotion while reading until this book. This book made me want to read again, but also made me want to avoid books that made me feel sad. I only wanted to read happy books.
  • Beverly Cleary

    Beverly Cleary
Beverly Cleary is the author that turned me from someone who had to read, to someone who loved to read. Her books about Ramona Quimby and Ralph S. Mouse helped my imagination grow. I learned how paint vivid picture in my mind while reading her words.

    Junior High and High School

In Junior High and High School, I leanred to expolore other genres. I loved learning about genres other than fiction, particularly poetry. I remember learning about Edgar Allan Poe. His poetry and short stories were riveting, creepy, and beautiful, all at the same time. I also learned how to read for a purpose, such as research, or studying. I excelled in school and graduated 27th in my class.

  • Reading to My Children

    Reading to My Children
My daughter was born on March 5, 1996. I loved to read to her when she was little. She loves to read, to this day, and I think that reading to her as a child help instill that love for books. I read to her two younger brothers too, but for some reason they did not. One of our favorite books to read together was "Tiki Tiki Tembo,"
  • Book Club

    Book Club
In 2001 I moved to England and quickly figured out that I needed things to keep me busy. I joined a book club and my love for reading was further ignited. We read one book a month that was chosen by the hostess. Some of the titles I would have never read if I hadn't been a part of this club. I discovered one of my favorite books of all time, "The Good Earth."
  • Teaching Literacy

    Teaching Literacy
When I finally moved to Las Vegas in 2008, I was lucky enough to land a job as a literacy aide in an elementary school. I loved teaching children to read and using guided reading strategies to help them with comprehension and understanding. It is because of this job opportunity that I decided to pursue Speech Pathology.
