I was five years old during this time. I was the oldest in my class because of my late birthday, so I started off on a higher reading level than most in my class. My mom practiced reading with me to prepare me for kindergarten.

I was always encouraged to read by my teachers. They created opportunities for students to be able to attend reading parties for accomplishing a certain number of books read. It was a great incentive. Most kids read in order to not be left out of attending the party.
-
I liked to read books about true events. I gravitated towards books that were non-fiction and about kids or teenagers because I could relate to them.
-
We did not have a library at my middle school. I stopped reading as much because of the lack of resources to different books.
-
My reading/English teacher did not focus too much on reading. We mainly did grammar activities in class. I lost interest in reading. I also always struggled in English class.

My mom saw how much I was struggling in English. To motivate me to read more, I had to read an article from the news and write a paragraph on the topic. This had to be done before I could go outside or hang out with friends. I wrote many papers and it did encourage me to read more because I found topics that interested me.

Throughout the rest of high school, I rarely ever read unless it was required in a textbook assignment.
-
My first year of college, I was overloaded with the amount of reading required for homework. I would find a way to get out of reading the textbook if I could just work with a partner. It was a huge struggle for me to overcome the reluctance towards reading to better help me understand class material.

Recently, I have found a new interest in fiction books. I have gotten better at reading books due to my journey in college and have actually enjoyed reading books within my field of study. I also believe my writing has improved drastically since I started reading more.

Currently I am a substitute teacher in an elementary school. I encourage my students to read and I love reading to them. I want them to have a different experience than I did because I see how it effected my perception of reading as I got older. Currently, I love reading non-fiction books.
