I started kindergarten in 2002 where I learned how to recognize the alphabet and its sounds.
-
By the end of kindergarten I knew my sight words/vocabulary words and their spelling.
-
I remember in 2nd grade my teacher noticed I was not improving orally in my reading so he place me in after school classes that worked on my reading. I am not sure if they would be called ESL classes, but I do believe they were of that that nature.
-
As I was imporving in reading I started to read more chapter books like Junie B. Jones. and others.
-
I received an award for reading at a higher grade level; the award was called, Super Reader: Accelerated Reader.
-
My 4th grade teacher's classroom library started my graphic novel hipe and then a manga craze. Fourth grade marked the year I began to read daily for fun. At the time I did know that my love for graphic novels would lead me to love reading.
-
I had gone to the library since the beginning of my reading experience, but as I started to seek more books to read, I frequently check out books at the library.
-
As I read more of my favorite types of books I began to read longer chapter books that were at and above my reading level.
-
Fifth grade marked the year I started to watch anime from Japan and other shows that required me to read subtitles. At first, I was not very good at keeping up, but when I kept watching I significantly got faster and better at reading overall.
-
Through out my middle and high school education, I read all types of books that caught my interest. The improvement I made in my reading was great in these years for I always kept an "A" in my reading and placed in the accelerated classes.

It amazes me to realize how far I have come in my love for reading. It is instresting to notice what exactly fueled that excitement, that being graphic novels. Today I still indulge in reading all books. At a younger age I was not the best reader and struggled, but when I found the boost I needed I grew as the reader I am today. Reading can take one on a journey to a fantasy world or through history, so I am glad I can experience those adventures.
