My Literacy

  • Playing Library

My sisters and I would set up a "library" in our bedroom and take turns being the librarian checking books in and out and organizing the books properly.
  • Joy of Reading for Fun

During my teens, probably around 14, I discovered romance novels. This was when I discovered the joy of reading for fun and escaping through books.
  • Learning Chinese

My first stop in the Air Force after boot camp. I spent 63 weeks at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, learning Chinese for the Air Force.
  • Reading to my kids

Got married and became a step-mom of 2 boys, 3 and 6. We read a lot of books together.
  • Airman Leadership School

Leadership training while in the Air Force. First training that included making speeches. Major turning point in my life for communicating to large groups.
  • Teaching My Son To Read

This was a negative/frustrating event. My middle son struggled when learning to read. We spent hours and hours reading the same pages and books over and over, sounding words out. He just couldn't retain the information! Eventually, in about the first grade, something clicked and his reading took off. He now reads more than either of his two brothers.
  • President, First Six Association

Volunteered to be president of very large, non-profit organization made up of lower enlisted Airmen. Forced to coordinate, network, and speak publicly a LOT.
  • Non-Commissioned Officer Academy

Leadership training that also taught active listening, counseling, and supervisory skills.
  • Being a Nanny

While I was a nanny for a little girl for about a year and a half. She was 6 mo. when I started. I really got to focus on and work with her one-on-one to speak and read and communicate. It was such a wonderful experience!
  • Going to College

I decided to go back to school and get a degree in Early Childhood Development.
