My Life as a Reader: Allison Jones

  • A READER IS BORN

    A READER IS BORN
On a sunny Monday afternoon, a baby is born into this world! My mother spent everyday before and after I was born reading to me out loud whatever she was reading. As a result by age 3, I had listened to most Stephen King novels as well as typical children's books.

    THE ELEMENTARY YEARS

I was an early reader and I LOVED to read. My goal was to win the most AR points every year. I was reading chapter books by the first grade and I was on a college reading level by third grade. My favorite type of books were fairy tales and magic! I love Gail Carson Levine and read her books repetitively. Other notable mentions:
    Junie B. Jones
    Nancy Drew
    Harry Potter Series
    Magic Treehouse

    MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

I continued to be a dedicated reader in middle and high school. My mom had the policy that I could read anything as long as it was in a book and to know to ask her if I had any questions. Thus I became an avid Stephen King fan, a lover of crime thrillers, Agatha Christie fan, and I had a really intense phase of reading romance novels. Jane Austen and Sylvia Plath became my literary heroes to soothe my teenage angst. I read everything I could get my hands on!
  • My Library

    My Library
I spent every weekend at my local library. I would check out 8-10 books at a time. My fondest memory is walking through the aisle with my Pawpaw whose job it was to carry them all. I was there so much they made me a summer volunteer where I worked with the Children's Summer Reading Program. It was here that I decided I wanted to work with kids and books! I found so much joy in sharing my love of reading.

    UGA- Becoming a Teacher
I began my education to become a teacher! I wanted to teach kids how to read! Still do!

    COLLEGE YEARS

I spent a lot of time in college reading in between classes and my two jobs! I really got into classic literature and science fiction! Suspense novels were still my go-to!
  • Decatur Book Festival

    Decatur Book Festival
As an adult, I started attending the annual Decatur Book Festival! I loved going to do bookish things with bookish people. I still try to go despite the fact that I have moved back up to North Georgia.
  • My Favorite Book Stores

    My Favorite Book Stores
Since moving back to North Georgia, I have two favorite book stores! One is an independent book store cafe called The Book and Cover. It is a small homey shop with a great curated selection. I attend a monthly fantasy book club here!
The other is McKay's which is a GIANT used bookstore where you can find used books for a little as a dollar and do trade ins!
  • CURRENT READING OBSESSIONS

I have fallen into a new genre of high fantasy romance novels. Books such as A Court of Thorn and Roses series, Ash and Blood series, and more. I am trying to be less snobby in my reading choices and expand my circle a little more!
