They moved from Kazahkstan to America and Maya was sent to a very religous school.She likes it so far. She likes gymnastics and other activities.They got to America by a dating magazine. Maya's Aunt Madina married a guy named Bob Cambell.Then she went to school in the next few days after that. -

A few days after they got to America.Maya's parents got jobs. They got jobs so they would ber able to pay the bills and get food. Her dad got a job as a cab driver.Which is mentioned through the story.And her mom got a job as cleaning up houses until she could get a good job.Her mom is a key character through the story just like the her dad. -
The Permission Slip
At school, Maya got a permission slip to get on the gymnastics teams.Her parents have to sign this slip saying bthat she will have a ride there and home and that Maya will be able to particapate.If she will be able to particapate then she will have fun.Maya doubts that her parents will sign the slip but she dont know.People can change alot. -
Maya to the office
Mrs.Coe said that Maya was wanted in the office. I was stunned because she nodded and pointed to me (Okimoto 110) . The principle Mr.Johnson said that Maya's brother got in a fight. Maya asked a bunch of Questions in the office. So Maya had to call her parents. She called the cab company and told her dad. He was mad but he said that he would come to the school. So Maya went to Evergreen to wait on her dad. -
The Translation
So Maya's Dad came to the school and had a talk with the principle while Maya translated. Maya translated but did not say everything the principle said. She changed the words around. She changed them so her and her brother would not get in trouble.Her brother got in a lot of trouble but she did not. -
The Cab
After the translation Maya went to the cab with her brother. And they went straight home. On the way there Maya thought about how she had changed what Mr.Shanaman said. Also on the way to there house She thought about Anne Frank and the nazis. She thought about how the family had lied about keeping Anne's family. -
Home
When Maya and her brother got home Nurzhan went straight to the table with his books. Maya began peeling potatoes for dinner. Maya was furious at Nurzhan because he made her miss her gymnastics meet. Maya was shouting harsh words at Nurzhan while waving the knife in her hand and her brother got scared. When their mother got home Maya told her about what had happened. -
Practice
The next day she went to practice and Mrs.Coe was very understanding of the situation. She said that the whole team was getting new leotards. While Maya and Shannon were waiting on the activity bus two guys from the wrestling team joined them.
