My Cold War Timeline

By Nick.R
  • The Yalta conference.

This was a meeting in a russian resort town in Crimea between the 3 allies: the US, UK, and the USSR. This meeting was to discuss what to do about Germany and all of Europe, they were planning of separating germany into four separate groups. They also promised all liberated countries free elections which was a first so it effected liberalism a lot for people. Stalin lied though and his country basically stayed the same way.
  • The Postdam conference

after the first meeting a lot has changed, both churchill and roosevelt were out of office and replaced by Truman and Clement-atlee, Stalin was still the president of USSR though. Truman also finished the Atom bomb, this meeting also didn't really effect liberalism because this conference just made more tensions which started the cold war.
  • The tragic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The US detonated two bombs on Japan’s cities Nagasaki and Hiroshima, this was the only use of nuclear weapons so far. Those nukes killed between 126-290,000 people, most of them were civilians. This was also revenge for the bombing of pearl harbour and the US’s entry into the war.
  • The Molotov Plan

This again was a "two can play it that way" moment and this was the Russians way of providing aid to all the Eastern European countries that politically and economically aligned with the Soviet Union. This helped many countries (18 to be exact.)
  • The Truman Doctrine.

Greece and Turkey were both effected bot the war HEAVILY which made matters worse because they were under the influence of communism. The US had a great idea to stop this though, buy there love! Basically they first gave 400 million dollars to Greece and Turkey but after that being a huge success they aided 14 other countries afterwards. This effected European Liberalism greatly because they were (mostly) not under communist rule anymore.
  • The Brussels treaty

This treaty was signed by five countries: Belgium, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and The United Kingdom. This was created for a collective defense alliance, this was on of the reason NATO became a thing and it showed that Western European states could cooperate.
  • The Marshall Plan

So this was the big brother of the Truman Doctrine because instead of 400 million dollars the US turned that number in 13 billion dollars to help support the recovery of Western European countries.
  • The Berlin Blockade

This was the first major crisis of the Cold War, the USSR blocked railways and canal access that the US had to the sectors of Berlin under Western control, this lead to even more tensions between the two powers and things were starting to get heavy.
  • The creation of NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance built up of 28 European countries, 2 North American countries, and 1 Asian country. This was a huge impact of Liberalism because this was created to bring freedom, security, and safety to all the group members.
  • The Soviets created nukes

This was the first test of a nuke in Soviet Russia, the test was called RDS-1 Semipalatinsk test site. The nuke had a yield of 22 kilotons.
  • The Korean War

This war started when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea both sides were aided by the US and the USSR
  • The death of a madman

Joseph Stalin’s reign of terror was finally over after he suffered a stroke. The next couple of people to take his place had a lot of troubles and the USSR were never the same again, which effected the weight of the Cold War.
  • The creation of The Warsaw Pact

This treaty was basically a NO U to NATO because it was the Russians way of saying "Two can play it that way." it was a treaty made in Warsaw, Poland signed between the soviets and seven other eastern european countries. This was there way of bringing freedom to the communist countries.
  • The Vietnam war

The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia and was officially fought between North Vietnam(US) and South Vietnam(USSR). This lead to the reunification of Vietnam, the communists took over officially, and the US leaving Vietnam.
  • The Hungarian revolution

This was a countrywide revolution against the Stalinist government of the Hungarian People's Republic and the Hungarian domestic policies imposed by the USSR.
  • The Creation of NORAD

This was a Binational military command between US and Canada to control the Aerospace control and warning, This helped monitor drug trafficking and help combat the flow of illegal drugs in North America.
  • Fidel Castro takes the office

After Batista got overthrown in 1959, Castro assumed military and political power as Cuba's prime minister. He then adopted a Marxist–Leninist model of development, Castro converted Cuba into a one-party, socialist state under Communist Party rule, the first in the Western Hemisphere.
  • The bay of pigs

The US needed to do something about Castro, so they sent in 5000 or so units to the southwest side of Cuban. They got absolutely slaughtered and the rest of the units that didn’t die were taken prisoner, this was named “the worst invasion ever.”
  • The Berlin wall

This piece of history was one of the worst events to happen in the Cold War. The Soviet Union split berlin into two: One side was protected by the US (western side) and the other side by the USSR (eastern side), this split caused chaos because families were split apart and never to be seen again, and tensions grew even more between the two main countries, an all out war almost started.
  • The end of the Cuban missile crisis

So the USSR had nukes and with Castro in control of Cuba and he had the same ideas as the USSR, when the Soviet Union got closer to the US with nukes in Cuba, the end of the world was closer then we thought. The US also had nukes somewhere hidden close to the USSR so if someone was to press the big red button, then everyone would and that would be the end of the world.
  • The no nuke treaty

The Nuclear Arms Treaty was a treaty that controlled all the nukes in the world and was a prevention of nuclear weapons in the Cold War and in any war.
  • Solidarity in Poland

when the Communist government of Poland signed the agreement allowing for its existence. The government attempted to destroy the union and after several years of repression, they ended it with a negotiating with the union.
  • The fall of the wall

After years of suffering in Germany the Cold War finally began to thaw across Eastern Europe and the spokesman for East Berlin's Communist Party announced a change in his city's relations with the West. At midnight, they finally opened the borders and people were finally free.
  • The Czechoslovakia revolution

This revolution was a Political repression Authoritarianism Economic stagnation Alleged death of Martin Smid and the goals were to resignation of the Communist government Democracy and free elections Civil rights Economic reform.
  • The end?

The official end of the scariest cat and mouse game ever, it lasted 45 years and was almost the end of the end, everyone was happy it was over because everyone thought it would never end.
  • The Afghanistan war

It began when the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan and toppled the Taliban-ruled Islamic Emirate. This was to kick out the Soviets and free all the civilians.
