Sam came home for the first time in the book. He had been away at college, and his family missed him very much.

Sam annouces he's a rebel. Father says, "We've had these things before - that vicious nonsense of those madmen dressing up like Indians and throwing tea into Boston Harbor, as if wetting a few hundredweight of tea would stop the mightest army on the face of the earth." p. 6-7. I think Father is refering to The Boston Tea Party.

Sam steals the Brown Bess. He and Father had been arguing about Sam being a rebel. Sam wanted Brown Bess because he wanted to fight in the war.

The Patriots come into the travern and cut Father becaue they wanted the Brown Bess so that the Torries wouldn't have any weapons to help the English. Sam had already stolen the Brown Bess.

Tim agrees to deliver letters for Mr. Heron despite what Father says which was that he thought it was for the war. He did not want Tim to be a part of it, but Tim wanted to deliver the letters because he thought it would be an adventure.

On the way to Verplanks Point, Tim and Father encounter Cowboys who wanted to steal their cattle so that they could sell it themselves. The Cowboys sold themselves off as Patriots working for a good cause. They took cattle and then sold it to anyone whether they were a Patriot or a British army member.

Father is kidnapped by Cowboys. Tim, devistated, goes home with the goods on his own, and he has to mature quick to keep the travern running.

Tim witnesses the death of his own friend, who is killed by a knife. His head pops off of his neck. The British attacking his town confuses him because he isn't sure what side to be on, because the Patriots have already kidnapped his father.

Sam is visiting Tim. Sam and Tim catch two men trying to steal and butcher the cattle. The two men didn't want to be caught for stealing cattle because their leader would execute them for it so they blamed it on Sam instead.

Tim sneaks into the town to free Sam, who is in jail because he was accused of stealing cattle. Tim throws a knife over the fence to wake up the gaurd who starts shooting. He realizes that Sam has been moved to a different location.

Sam is executed for stealing cattle even though he was innocent.
