    After a large number of immigrant children arrive in Miami from Cuba, Coral Way Elementary is said to be the first school to to teach and be bilingual/bicultural. It is extremely important as previously stated this was the first bilingual school as a result of a demand for a bilingual school.
  • Civils Right Act of 1964

    Civils Right Act of 1964
    The Civils Right Act movement was helpful as it gave basic human rights to people of color. It protected everyone from being discriminated against their gender, skin color, religion, sex or nationality.
  • Indian Education Act

    Indian Education Act
    The Indian Education Act was very special due to the fact that prior to this there was nothing to support Native Americans. This act recognized how unique, the amount of culture Native Americans have as well as their own language. Also provides additional learning services that are not provided by the Indian Affairs.

    Lau VS. Nichols
    US Supreme Court rules that San Francisco School District is to provide English Language instructions to limited English Speaking students. This was very important in multicultural education as it required every student to have the equal opportunity to learn irregardless of their proficiency in English.

    Equal Educational Opportunity Act
    The Equal Education Act of 1974 was important because it allowed all students to learn irregardless of their skin color or gender as well as the faculty and staff. It eliminated racial segregation. This helped shape multicultural learning as everyone learned the same information.
  • Refugee Act of 1980

    Refugee Act of 1980
    Allowed over 3 million refugees to resettle in the US for humanitarian reasons. The individuals whom migrated were diverse and helped bring issues into classrooms. Teacher were able to teach about different cultures by utilizing new students coming into classrooms.

    Plyer VS. Doe
    The Supreme Court denied the states request to not allow undocumented students access to public school. This is historical as it allowed students of different races to be treated equally whether they were legal residents of the US or not.
  • 1990 Immigration Nationality Act

    1990 Immigration Nationality Act
    Allowed people of other nationalities into the United States in a lottery program. All people came from diverse backgrounds and allowed for family sponsored, employment based, skilled workers, priority workers' visas.

    Improving America's School Act
    Allowed equal opportunity and equal education for all children. There was an investment in schools and how they should reframe their teaching methods so all students have the same opportunity irregardless of their native languages.

    This even affects the LGBTQ community which is part of a subculture. Students and faculty that may not identify with their assigned sex at birth may no longer use the facilities that they identified with.
