On October 4, 1957 the USSR successfully launched Sputnik 1. It was the world's first artificial satellite and it was approximately the size of a beach ball. It weighed only 183.9 lbs. -
The first animal to orbit the earth in space was the dog Laika. It paved the path to put humans in space. Sputnik 2 weighed 508 kg, much more than it's predecessor. -
Explorer 1 was the first successful satellite launched by the USA. It was a response to the Soviet Union's "Sputnik 1". Explorer 1 remained in orbit for 12 years, it completed more than 58,400 orbits. -
President Eisenhower signed NASA into law on July 29, 1958. The agency officially open on Oct. 1, 1958. NASA has been in business for 66 years and continues space exploration. -
Alexei Leonov of the USSR became the first man to complete a spacewalk. He exited the capsule of the Voskhod 2 mission for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. Leonov opened a valve in his spacesuit to let air escape in order to get back on the spaceship. -
During the Gemini 4 mission, Ed White became the first man to complete a spacewalk. The spacewalk lasted 23 minutes. The EVA started over Hawaii and ended over the Gulf of Mexico.
