Mount Merapi Eruption events

  • First Eruption

    Mount Merapi erupted late tuesday afternoon, at about 5:50pm. Three loud explosions occured, spewing ash into the sky.
  • Volcano is continuously erupting

    At least 28 people have been killed and 14 injured. 11,000 villagers have been evacuated and many houses have already been lost.
  • City of Yogyakarta hit by ash rain

    The city of Yogyakarta is hit by ash rains. Houses and streets are covered in layers of grayish white ash. The death toll has risen to 34.
  • Ash rains have now reached the city of Solo

    Ash rains from the volcano mixed with normal rain reach the city of Solo.
  • Erupts again with more force

    Mount Merapi erupted again on wednesday with more force than last week's blasts. It spewed out hot ash, lava, and burning rocks, they flew up to 5 kilometers into the sky for over an hour. They expanded Merapi's danger zone to 15 kilometers.
  • Panic breaks out after last eruption and death toll rises

    Panic broke out after the most recent large eruption.The chaos caused traffic problems, where at least two people died. The death toll has now risen to 89.
  • Death toll rises again, Mt Merapi let out thunderous roars

    The death toll has risen to 122. Merapi's thunderous roars lwere heard up to 25 kilometers away as it shot hot ash 10 kilometers into the sky and 11 kilometers down its slopes.

    The volcano is showing no signs of cooling down and the death toll has risen to 135. All flights around this area have been cancelled. 300,000 people have been evacuated

    The volcano is still very active and hot ash clouds are still hitting the area around the volcano every few hours. Conditions are still very dangerous.

    Mount Merapi is still erupting, but is less violent now. Thunderous sounds are still heard though.

    Eruptions have gotten less, letting people search th area. the death toll has risen to 191 and over 340,000 people are staying in tempory camps.
  • Showing signs of cooling down

    Mount Merapi is showing signs of cooling down. Almost 200 people have died. However it is still exhausting hot ash clouds.
  • Volcano activity has decreased

    Mount Merapi has stopped erupting and the danger zone has been reset. the deth toll has increased to 240.
  • Riverside areas threatened my volcanic mudflows

    Places loacted by the river have been threatened by volcanic mudflows.
  • Volcano Stops completely

    Mount Merapi has stopped erupting and many people have retured to whats left of their homes. The death toll stands at 304 people.
