A few days after the new moon phase, the moon begins to move away from it's direct path between the sun and earth. We can see a small part of the moon because we are seeing it at an acute angel.
-
Third stage in the moon phase. Occurring between new moon and full moon, when half of the lighted surface is visible from earth
-
Phase in between a half moon but less than a full moon. A majority of the moon is visible from earth during this phase.
-
During this phase, the whole surface of the moon is illuminated and is visible from earth.
-
Just like the waxing gibbous phase, the majority of the moon's surface is illumated. The difference is that instead of increasing in visibility, it is decreasing.
-
Stage after waning gibbous, where only the left side of the moon is visible from earth.
-
Same as the waxing crescent phase, only difference is that the moon is loosing visibility rather than gaining it.
-
Phase where the moon is closest to the sun. The moon is normally not visible during this phase.
