Month by Month Pregnancy Development

  • Conception

    Every 28 days you release an ovum that travels down your fallopian tube and waits for a sperm. The sperm reaches the ovum and fertilizes it.The egg changes so no ther sperm can get in. The ovum then travels to the uterus where it implants in the uterine wall. The uterine wall has thickened to support the ovum.
  • Month 1

    *Germinal Stage- 1st week to the 2nd week
    Cell Division- Single cell splits into 2 then 4 then 8 and so on.
    Implantation - Zygote implants in the uterine wall and is covered by it.
    3rd week beginning of Embryonic Stage
    Missed menstrual period.

  • Month 2

    8th week end of Emryonic Stage
    9th week beginning of Fetal Stage Fatigue is common, breasts start to swell, and frequent urination occur.
  • Month 3

    Uterus is about the size of an orange, weight gain 2 - 4 pounds, abdomen becomes slightly larger.
  • Month 4

    Mother may begin to feel the fetus move. Appetite increases, abdomen continues to grow slowly, and most discomforts of early pregnancy are usually gone.

    It is important to tell your doctor when you begin to feel kicks because if you don't feel kicks by the 4th or 5th month there could be something wrong with the fetus.
  • Month 5

    Mother is feeling the fetus kick. Slight fetal movements can be felt, enlarged abdomen is showing, increased size may begin to affect your posture.
  • Month 6

    Weight gain this month is about 10 - 12 pounds, and fetal movements are strong and some can be seen.
  • Month 7

    Your increased size may affect posture. The baby is able to live outside the womb now.
  • Month 8

    Fetal movements may disturb your rest, weight gain this month is about 18 - 20 pounds, and discomfort may result from your increased size.
  • Month 9

    40th week end of Fetal Stage Weight gain this month is about 25 - 35 pounds, false labor pains may be experienced, "lightening" felt as the fetus drops into pelvis breathing becomes easier.
  • Length of Pregnancy

    The average length of pregnancy is 40 weeks or 280 days.
  • What happens at the end of 40 weeks ?

    The baby's weight shifts downward and most mothers begin to feel comfortable in their upper abdomen. Utreus muscles contract to expel baby during delivery. Mother's uterine and abdominal muscles usually return to size about 6 weeks after delivery.
