    Maria Montessori born on August 31 in Chiaravalle, Ancona province, Italy
  • Attends a technical school for boys

    Fond of math and science Montessori wanted more from her education and attended an all boys school where she discovered her love of biology and desire to study medicine
  • A Prophetic Incident

    At a breaking point during her student days, she went to abandon her work in the morgue and happened upon a beggar woman and her child on her way home. Shocked and intrigued by the child's behavior while the mother was begging, Montessori returned to the morgue to finish her work, overwhelmed by emotion.
  • Becomes a Doctor

    Maria Montessori was the first woman to obtain a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Rome
  • Feminist rally

    Maria Montessori was chosen to represent the women of Italy at a feminist rally held in Berlin, where she was championed the cause of the working women. Later she attended a similar rally in London.

    Montessori occupied the Chair of Hygiene at the Magiestero Femminile in Rome. During this time she also held a position as one of the external examiners in the Faculty of Pedagogy, and as a Professor at the University of Rome where she occupied the Chair of Anthropology.

  • Psychiatric clinic work

    Works at the psychiatric clinic in Rome attending to the children who lived there. She succeeds in fostering the development of some of the children to which they can compete with traditionally educated children.

    Gives up her position at the orthophrenic school in Rome and returns to University to study philosophy and psychology

  • The Montessori Method

    The Montessori Method
    Montessori publishes her first book, which has now been translated in over twenty languages.
  • Resigns from Medical Practice

    Resigns her teaching post at the University of Rome and gives up her private medical practice to concentrate entirely on education
  • Montessori Visits America

    After the passing of her mother Montessori visits America in which she gives lectures, meets with diplomats, and helps found the American Montessori Society.

    During the international training course in 1916 Montessori focuses largely on elementary education, and in 1917 she publishes a book on the education for 7-11 year olds.
