  • Porclamation of Neutrality

    George Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality stated that the United States would not take sides in the war between other nations, specifically the United Kingdom and France

  • XYZ Affair

    The French were upset that the United States didn't take their side in the war and seized American ships. American diplomats were sent to try and compromise but the French tried to bribe them.

  • Convention of 1800

    This ended the Quasi-War that had been caused by the XYZ Affair.

  • Louisiana Purchase

    The French sold the Louisiana Territory to the Americans at a very low cost under Napolean Bonaparte,

  • Embargo Act

    Both the British and the French banned trade with eachother and Neutral parties, like the US. Americcan ships were being seized by both natioins. In an attempt to avoid war the embargo act prohibited trade with all foreign ports. This ended up hurting the United States.
