XYZ Affair
It was a diplomatic and political incident in which, President Adams had sent two American delegates to meet with French officials in hope that tensions could subside. However, The french minsiter sent 3 agents (known as X,Y,Z) to demand the American delegates money before they could meet with french officials. This made the Americans mad because they saw it a bribery and ultimatly led to the Quasi-war. -
Convention of 1800
it was a peace agreement that restored peace between America and France after the XYZ affair and ended the Quasi-war. -
Louisiana Purchase
President Jefferson purchased the Lousiana purchase from Napolean of France. With it's 15 Million dollar purchase, it doubled the size of the United States. Although much of congress wondered if it was constitutional for many years. -
Embargo Act
This law stopped all trade between America and any other countries. The goal was to get Britain and France, who were fighting each other at the time, to stop restricting American trade and ultimatly keep us out of conflict. The Act backfired, and the American trade suffered. -
War of 1812
It was a naval confrontation between America and Great Britian. Britian had been taking American sailors and forcing them into the British naval service (impressment). Americans seeking war, known as War Hawks, wanted war against Britian. The war lasted two years in which many significant events occured like, Andrew Jackson becoming a hero, the white house being burned down, and a new era for america. -
Treaty of Ghent
This treaty formally ended the war of 1812. Neither America or Britian gained anything as a result of it. However, it had given the United States this new found sense of nationalism and respect because once again they had stood up to one of the strongest nations, Great Britian. -
Monroe Doctrine
Enacted by President James Monroe. It stated that the Americas were no longer open for other nations to colonize and would not tolerate any European affair involving an American independent nation. Basically telling Europe "Hands off the Western Hemisphere"
