  • Foundation of Melbourne

    John Batman, having sailed on to the mouth of the Yarra River, finds his way to a point which was probably Edgar's Creek (near Thomastown). He signs two treaties with the local Aborigines by which he claims 500,000 acres north of Melbourne and Corio Bay and 100,000 acres around Geelong and Indented Head. Batman declares a point upstream from the Yarra River's mouth will be the site for a village, which was later to become the Melbourne of today.

  • Queen's Wharf

    Melbourne is declared a legal port and administrative centre, opening the way for vastly increased immigration (QUEENS WHARF).

  • Proclamation

    Melbourne proclaimed a city on 25 June.

  • First Town Hall Completion

    The first Town Hall is complete (not Melbourne Town Hall)

  • SLV Founding

    The State Library of Victoria is founded.

    Melbourne Town Hall

    Melbourne Town Hall is constructed.

  • Grand Organ

    A grand organ was installed and opened in the Town Hall, in the presence of the Governor.

  • Improvements to Melbourne Town Hall

    Melbourne Town Hall has a portico frontage added. This was the final large change to the building.
