  • #1 - Gets Discriminated by Nuns, expelled

    • Marji becomes more rebellious and her mom’s permission of such an act leads her to believe she could do anything

  • #2 - Meeting Druggie Friends

    Marji is exposed to drugs and rebellion. Although she doesn’t actually do the drugs, she pretends. She is also introduced to smoke joints. “I didn’t like to smoke, but I did it out of solidarity.” (Satrapi, 192)
  • #3 - First real exposure to "ping pong balls" and sex

    Marji is shocked. Very shocked. It was almost as if the innocence in her was shocked out at this moment. “OH, OH, OH! AH, AH! OH YES! OH! AH! YES!” (Satrapi, 186)

    After being rejected by a guy, Marji felt insecure and alone. She developed a sense of desperateness for love. “After my romantic disappointment with Enrique,... I felt even more unlovable and had even less self confidence.” (Satrapi, 216)
  • #5- Meeting Markus and getting drugs at Cafe Camera

    Direct contact with drugs. She felt cool and her boyfriend was proud. Her desperateness to impress Markus led her to continue on to deal drugs in school “This is how, for love, I began my career as a drug dealer. Hadn’t I followed my mother’s advice? I was no longer a simple junkie, but my school’s official dealer.” (Satrapi, 222)
