Known for its brutality and violent conditions, the city is known to Iranians as "Juninshahr", which means City of Blood.

  • Returns Iran

    The war against Iraq is over but the country is in ruins and the regime remains as repressive as before. Marjane, very excited to be reunited with her family, her country and her bedroom, quickly discovers that she is considered a Westerner in her country, just as she was considered an Iranian in Europe, in a ghost town and a bedroom empty of many memories.
  • Khomeini's death

    After Khomeini's death in 1989, he was succeeded by Ali Khamenei, the current head of state, leaving the head of government open to elections every four years in which there has been a struggle between a reformist sector led by Muhammad Khatami and another conservative sector.
  • Marjane definitely leaves Iran and goes to France.

    Along with his friends from university, he invents an escape valve, behind closed doors, a space of freedom, life and identity. This space, of parties and secret meetings will not be enough for him and following the advice of his parents.
  • His grandmother dies

    An independent and open-minded woman, she comes from a noble family. She is proud of her origins, but, at the same time, she repudiates the Islamic fundamentalists and her determination to determine how people should live. The grandmother is the moral and emotional reference for Marjane since she was little and she tells her how she has to walk her path towards maturity
