    MALDEF opens doors.
    MALDEF opens their organization after getting 2.2 million dollars from the ford foundation. They are founded in 1968, San Antonio Texas. They formed civil right attorneys and members of the community.

    MALDEF first voting rights victory. U.S Supreme Court holds a lower power for Muti member voting right. Texas is now discriminatory to let Latinos and African Americans to vote for their representatives.

    Federal voting acts 1975
    MALDEF succeeds in convincing congress to extend voting rights to Latinos after a decade. The extension to the new voting rights act allows establishment of bilingual ballots. Also and other efforts to ease Latinos.
  • Plyer vs. DOE

    Plyer vs. DOE
    MALDEF challenges a law denying funding education to immigrants. The 1977 lawsuit leads to the landmark 1982 and makes education available for K-12 of educational schools despite of any Immigration status. Plyer Hernandez is named president and general counsel of MALDEF
  • EDGEWOOD ISD VS KIRBY 1989

    EDGEWOOD ISD VS KIRBY 1989
    MALDEF files a lawsuit in 1984 on behalf of school and families challenging discrimination of Texas and financing the schools. Texas Supreme Court ruling in 1989 declaring that the states financing system is unconstitutional. The case led to better funding for the school.
