Major Events That Shaped American Education

  • Common Schools

    Common schools were funded by local property taxes, and charged no tuition. Good schools were good business it provided a future for the economy and democracy. Education to all children no matter whom or where they were born
  • Homestead Act

    Abraham Lincoln, singed a law, a program designed to grant public land to small farmers. The law gave the head of household who was 21 years or older. This wave of land and immigration forced changes to the nations schools.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Supreme court ruling, established the rule that "separate" facilities for whites and blacks. They had to be constitutional as long as they were equal. An unshared era of racial segregation.
  • The Feminization of Teaching

    This movement established the role of teaching for men and women. It also included equality between men and women. It was a new profession that women could take the role in teaching.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    This movement established the federal government effort to equalize education. It was also equalize for children of color. Brown vs board of education led to segregation in schools. This event in history made equal rights and opportunities for all children no matter color or culture.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Ruling that separate is not equal, and it outlaws segregation. The decision held that the racial segregation of children in public schools violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.
  • Sputnik

    Soviets made history to launch the first satellite to orbit. More than $1 billion was put into public schools. It also made new math and science curriculums.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    It aimed to provide equal access to education and social opportunity for low-income and disadvantage students.   • Title IX

    No person can be excluded from a school program based on their sex. At the time this gave women more athletics and opportunities.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This act set certain test standards that students must reach. If the students don't reach those test standards, the school district may face federal assistance money. This program is to help disadvantage students reach the same goals as advanced students.
