    The attack on Pearl Harbor was as a complete surprise. Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes and bombers flew to Pearl Harbor and attacked. Almost 4780 people from the U.S. died and almost 2356 were wounded.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    This battle had begun June 6, 1944. It was known as D-Day. 156,000 americans, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches on the coast of Normandy, France. This invasion was one of the largest assaults in history. Dwight Eisenhower had selected June 5, 1944, as the date for the invasion; however, bad weather on the days resulted to be delayed for 24 hours. More than 4,000 Allied troops lost their lives in the D-Day invasion, with thousands more wounded or missing.

    Battle of Iwo Jima
    Iwo Jima is a small island located 750 miles south of Tokyo, Japan.The Japanese had dug all sorts of tunnels and hiding places all over the island. They were waiting quietly for more marines to get on shore. Once a number of marines were on shore they attacked. Many US soldiers were killed. The battle went on for days.The Japanese would move from area to area in their secret tunnels. Sometimes the US soldiers would kill the Japanese in a bunker.

    Since then, people across the world have observed Victory in Europe Day -- or V-E Day -- on May 8 each year. Russia, however, following the Soviet Union's practice, observes its Victory Day on May 9. About 15 million soldiers and 45 million civilians died during the conflict. President Harry S Truman dedicated the victory to his predecessor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who died April 12, 1945, weeks before the war ended in Europe.

    Bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    On August 6, 1945, during World War II, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bombing wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. Just three days later another bomb was dropped over Nagasaki. Over 40,000 people died. Emperor Hirohito, defined this to be ,“a new and most cruel bomb.”
  • V-J Day

    V-J Day
    On August 14th Japan surrendered. On August 15th this surrender was announced to the world. This day was called V-J day, meaning Victory in Japan. September 2 was the ceremony and formal signing of surrender. Casualties were high on both sides. On August 6, 1945 the U.S. Military dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima leading to a quick surrender. This day is known as V-J Day, V-P Day ( AKA Victory in the Pacific Day ).
