    D-day was the invasion of Normandy during WWII. In the book it was a couple of weeks before Lily went to Rockaway. The day she left she heard it blaring on the radio's news.

    People were not forced to join the war in America. This is about the time in the book when Lily mentions how her friend Margaret's brother went to war the year before.
  • Factory jobs during the war

    People had to move to areas with factories to help out with making weapons for war. This is the date that Margaret (Lily's best friend) moved so that her dad could make weapons in a factory.
  • Repairing France during the war

    Peolpe were sent to France to help repair and rebuild after the area was just struck in WWII. This is the date that Lily found out her dad was being sent to Europe to help rebuild.
  • Stuck in Normandy

    This is the estimated time of when Lily heard radio news of soldiers stuck in Normandy, waiting to defeat the enemy.

    Naval bases trained and practiced in airplanes and ships. Albert got scared that a plane flying in Rockaway was the enemies. Lily had to calm him and explain that it was training.

    2% of people couldn't travel to America around the time of war because they were sick. This is about the date that Albert told Lily that his sister was sick and that is why she wasn't there.

    Everyone in Europe that had anything to do with the war couldn't write letters home (to America) that gave away their location. If they did when they were checked the information got crossed out. Lily's dad told her where he was by giving hints, until she figured out he was in France.

    The Battle of Paris caused it to be free from Germany. When Lily heard the radio news in Mrs. Sherman's Bakery she new the war would be over soon, and was excited for it.

    Germany is no longer in charge, because the allies have won. The war ended this day and Lily's father came home.
