    Born in Brussels, Belgium to parents Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston and Ella. Her father was an English Banker, her mother was a Dutch Baroness

  • Edda van Heemstra

    Audrey and her two half-brothers were sent to live with their grandfather in the Netherlands by their mother, so they would be safe from the German attack. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands, Hepburn took the name Edda van Heemstra. Her given name was considered dangerous because it sounded English and indicated her Bristish heritage.

    In 1944, Hepburn was an accomplished ballerina who would perform secretly for groups of people. That winter, Germans blocked off supply routes for food and fuel, leaving people to starve and freeze to death. Audrey suffered from malnutrition, anaemia, and respitory problems.

    Audrey moved to Amsterdam after the war, where she started taking ballet lessons with Sonia Gaskell. She then studied at Ballet Rambert and worked as a model part time to support herself. Rambert then later told Hepburn that because of her poor nutrition during the war and her tall height (5 ft 7) it would restrict her from becoming a prima ballerina that she had always dreamed of. This pushed her into pursuing an acting career.
