Gay rights activist Harry Hay founds the United States' first national gay rights organization in Los Angeles, California.

A "sip-in" was held in Greenwich Vilage, and the New York Liquor Authority prohibits serving gay patrons alcohol based on the premise that homosexuals are "disorderly". The Mattachine society sues the Liquor Authority to cause attention that homosexuals have the right to be served.

This historic event was the one year anniversary of the stonewall riots. There was a march through New York city in Central Park and there was thousands of members of the LBGT community particpating.

On this day President Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act into affect only allowing one man and one woman to get married. This does not allow the same sex to get married.

Vermont becomes the first state in the U.S. to legalize civil unions and registered partnerships between same-sex couples.

Vote of 65-31 repeals the act, allowing gays and lesbians to serve in the U.S. military.
