Leonardo da Vinci was born in Vinci in the region on Florence. His father, Piero Da Vinci, was a notary. His mother, Caterina, was a peasant woman.

At the age of fourteen, Da Vinci became an apprentice. He worked for the artist, Andrea Di Cione. He worked in one of the finest workshops in Florence.

After working in the shop for six years, Leonardo was accepted as a master in the Guild of St. Luke. At the age of twenty his father had also set him up his own workshop.

One of Leonardo's first paintings was The Baptism of Christ. He worked along with Verrocchio to complete it. Verrocchio had finished the major parts and Leonardo added detail and finished it.

Leonardo was asked to paint an alter piece to decorate the church of San Francesco Grande in Milan. There are now two copies of this painting. One resides in the Louvre and the other in the National Gallery in London.

One of Leonardo's most famous works was The Last Supper. He painted this for the dining room of the monastary where he and his patrons would go to eat with the monks. It represents Jesus telling his deciples that this was the last meal he would eat before he would be betrayed.

This painting is another famous one of Leonardo's . No one knows why he painted her or when, for he did not sign or date this picture. It now hangs in the Louvre Museum in France.

Leonardo died on May second of 1519. He was residing in Clos Luce in France when he died. Legends say the King Francis I held Leonardo's head in his arms as he died.
