Leading up to the American Revolution

  • The Navigation Acts

    The Navigation Acts
    The British empire made an act that the colonists had to only trade with Britain. This cause the colonists to be angry.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    England and the colonies fought along side each other and defeated the French and their Native American allies. The treasure was drained and the British wanted the colonists to pay.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    Parliament put a tax on newspapers, pamphlets, playing cards, and diplomas in America. this caused the colonists to be angry with being taxed without being represented.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    This happened in Boston. The colonists through snowballs at the redcoats and they retaliated and killed some of the people. The Patriots used this to make enmity between the colonists and England.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    This act was made in the desperate attempt to save the tea business. The allowed then to directly trade with the colonists, but the colonists didn’t like how Britain was controlling it. This caused the Boston Tea Party.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    The patriots in America were unhappy about England importing tea to America, so they dressed up as Indians and through the tea into Boston Harbor. This closed the harbor.
  • Coercive/ Intolerable Acts

    Coercive/ Intolerable Acts
    These acts were put in place to punish the patriots on Massachusetts for the Boston tea party. There were four acts total.
  • The First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress
    This meeting took place in Philadelphia. The delegates went there to talk about the injustices against them that Britain had done.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress
    The delegates got together again and started putting together a continental army to fight the British.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    This was the shot heard around the world. This was Britain’s first attack on the Patriots, and surprisingly, the Patriots won.
  • The Declaration of Independence Adopted

    The Declaration of Independence Adopted
    This was an official document that was written by 12 out of 13 of the colonies in America, declaring there independence from England. They sent it to the king, who was George III at the time.
  • The Battle of Saratoga

    The Battle of Saratoga
    This was a turning point for the patriots. They beat the British there and it led to the Dutch and French to join the patriot’s side.
  • Winter at Valley Forge

    Winter at Valley Forge
    This was a horrible winter that Washington and his soldiers had to deal with. They drew closer as a group from this experience.
  • The Battle of Yorktown

    The Battle of Yorktown
    This was a key battle in the Revolutionary war. The Americans finally beat the British here and the colonies were finally a country.
  • U.S. Constitution is Written

    U.S. Constitution is Written
    This document laid out what an American could do/ couldn’t do. It was the first document of its time, setting up the first government of its liking.
  • The U.S. Constitution is Adopted

    The U.S. Constitution is Adopted
    It was written in 1787, but it took a whole year to ratify. It would now be applied to the lives of the Americans.
