    Treaty of Ganghwa
    Cause: This treaty was formed due to the Unyo Maru Incident in which Japanese ships shot down those of Chosun. This caused fear amongst the Korean people which was an incentive to sign the treaty. Effect: This treaty allowed Japan to trade with Korea, and it also cut off Korean ties with their Chinese neighbor who had formerly been protecting them. Significance: The Japanese were the initiators of this treaty, pretty much forcing it on the Koreans who got the worse deal.

  • Gapsin Coup

    Gapsin Coup
    Cause: The Enlightenment party (Gaehwapa) wished to create rapid changes within Korea in regard to western trade and modernization, similar to what the Japanese had done. Effect: This resulted in the Treaty of Hanseung, in which Koreans were forced to pay Japan for the damages caused by Japanese during the coup d'état. Significance: This coup d'état demonstrated the weakness of Korea since, although it was Japanese reformers who had led it, the Koreans were the ones who paid the price.
  • Donghak Peasant Revolution

    Donghak Peasant Revolution
    Cause: Japanese invasion on Chosun's economy made people to create an anti-Japanese sentiment. More people began to not accept foreign power in Korea, and they caused the revolution. Effect: This revolution ended a series of Japanese coups in Korea that brought the Chosun dynasty to an end. Also, it allowed unlimited foreign trade, Korean scholars (yangbans) and peasants maintained independence by preventing further Japanese incursions into Korea.

  • Eulsa Treaty

    Eulsa Treaty
    Cause: This treaty was brought by Ito Hirobumi. Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War was the result of the withdrawal of Russian power in the Great Korean Empire. Also, it prohibited Japan from interfering with the United States. Effect: Secret emissaries were sent to the Second International Hague Peace Convention by King Gojeong in order to present that Eulsa Treaty is unfair. This resulted in refusal of foreign countries in allowing the Great Korea Empire to join the conference. Korean

    Eulsa Treaty (cont'd)
    scholars (yangbans) and peasants joined the army, and Eulsa Euibyeong was created to protest. Significance: Korea attempted to protest, and yangbans and peasants joined the army in order to support in protesting. However, foreign countries did not allow them to take part in the conference.
