    Tiny tobacco seeds were planted in seed beds.They wre covered with pine branches to protect them from the cold.

    Forests were cleared to make new tobacco fields.Tobacco ruined the soil after 4 or 5 years and new fields had to be constantly prepared,

  • Transplant

    After two months in the seedbeds, tobacco plants were llarge enough to transplant.

  • worming

    As the tobacco grew in the fields it had to be checked often for tobacco worms.

  • harvesting

    Late in summer or early fall the tobacco was harvested.

  • drying

    Stakes were hung in tobacca barns to dry for six to ten weeks.
