Infant
Infants are especially responsive to voices and faces. -
First Year
During the first year, an infant learns the sound patterns and has a better understanding of words, word production, and phrases. -
Toddler
By the second year vocabulary growths, vocabulary should be about 150 to 300 words. -
Three and Four Years Old
At the age of 3 and 4 words start to mushroom out to 900 and 1,500. Words are learned quickly through a process called fast mapping. -
Pre-school

First Grade
This is where the child starts to sound out words, learns to identify words, and understands their meaning. -
Fourth Grade
Use words appropriately in conversation with understanding some figurative language. -
Sixth Grade
11-13 year olds demonstrate an increased ability to look beyond literal interpretations and understand the metaphoric uses of language -
Ninth Grade
Demonstrates command of the conventions of standard grammar and usage when speaking or writing -
Twelve Grade
By twelve grade all knowledge of words and understanding should be understood
