Korean War - Proxy War Assignment

    US supports South Korea, USSR supports North Korea. This war is a proxy war because it has USSR supporting one side and the US supporting the other, fighting over their ideals in a different country. This proxy war is not officially over, as the war never really ended. There is currently a ceasefire but war could start up again. No side won this war, it was put on pause.
  • North Korean Control of the entire Korean Peninsula

    North Korean Control of the entire Korean Peninsula
    Soviet support helped North Korea take over the whole Korean peninsula. The US temporarily regrouped.
  • UN and US had pushed North Korea back all the way into China

    UN and US had pushed North Korea back all the way into China
    At this point China felt threatened by the US supported South Koreans. They sent 300 thousand troops to help support the USSR
  • UN forces pushed out of North Korea

    By this point Chinese assistance had helped to push the UN and US forces out of North Korea. The US and UN take this time to regroup before mounting a counterattack.
  • UN regains control over South Korea

    At this time the UN had successfully pushed North Koreans back into North Korea. At this point both sides were virtually where they started.
  • Cease Fire

    Cease Fire
    Finally after about four million deaths, there was a cease fire. The territory agreed upon, was no different than the start of the war. To this day the war has not ended, and any fighting that would happen in Korea would be considered as part of the Korea war still.

    Throughout the 1960s, South Korea concentrated on its industry and developing foreign trade. A succession of dictatorships ruled the rapidly developing country.

    A democratic constitution is established in South Korea, and the first free elections are held. To this day free elections are still held in South Korea. North Korea remains in totalitarianism.
  • Aftermath of the War

    Aftermath of the War
    Kim Il Sung dies and Kim Jong Il took over. When Kim took over he developed nuclear weapons, and did not have a strong economy. On the other hand, South Korea prospered. The USSR supported North Korea, did not see economic growth after the war, and is a totalitarian government. The US supported South Korea, saw huge economic growth after the war, and ended up with democratic elections.
