  • Hassan is born

    It was in a small shack that "Sanabuar gave birth to him one cold winter day in 1964"(6). Though Sanabaur is the mother to this child she does not care for him like a mother should. Sanabaur also feels ashamed for being with Ali who lives in a shack.
  • Kabul gets different monarchy

    On July 17. 1973, "Kabul awoke the next morning to find that the monarchy was a thing of the past" (36). This was also known as the downfall of the Afghan culture. After this Kabul, along with all other cities in Afghanistan, degressed turning into that rundown city that Amir visited thrity years later.
  • Baba pays for Hassan's harelip removal

    Amir thinks "of that day in 1974/ just after Hassan's harelip surgery" (219). He reminds himslef that he is the only one who was there that still has a healthy life. All of the others have died or is dying. This gives Amir guilt because all of those people have done much for him, yet he is the only one still living, or at least living with good health.
  • Amir wins the Kite Running tournament

    For Amir to win, he needed to take down the blue kite so when "he saw the blue kite spinning wildly like a tire come loose from a speeding car" he was ecstatic. It was at this very moment where he receives praise from his father (66)-. This was what Amit had been craving for his whole life, something to make his father proud. It was the first time in his likfe where he had been a hero instead of a coward.
  • Hassan gets violated

    Amir saw Hassan when he was being raped and wanted to help him, but "in the end, [he] ran"(77). Amir's actions were not acceptable, however, he was young at the time. Later in his life, he realizes that no matter what Assef would have done to Amir if he had saved Hassan, he would have still saved him rather than live with the guilt of remaining silent.
  • Baba and Amir go on a vacation

    Baba takes Amir to Jalalabad because he was proud of him for winning the kite runner tournament. However, it was not "the two of [them]" (82). Amir was finally going to get some bonding time with Baba, but could not with the other members of the trip. Also, the guilt that Amir lived with could not let him enjoy the trip whether it was with Baba or not. This trip reminded him of the blessing which he did not deserve.
  • Baba throws party for Amir

    Baba throws a party for Amir with which Amir does not recognize "three-quarters of the four hundred-plus" people whom Baba invited. At this party, Assef shows up and makes friends with Baba, which scares Amir. Amir feels that Assef brings back the horrible feeling of seeing Hassan being raped and not doing anything to stop it.

    The Soviet Union took over Afghanistan when "the First Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979"(New York Times).

  • Baba takes Amir to Jalalabad

    Baba was "taking '[Amir] to Jalalabad" to meet Baba's brother (111). He was doing this because Kabul was being more and more corrupt. This was where Baba stood up for himslef and nearly got he and Amir killed. The reason for why Baba stood up for himslef is because Baba had too much pride to live while being a coward.
  • Baba and Amir go to America

    The two of them went to the US because "Baba loved the idea of America" (125). Baba was grateful to live in a country with much opportunity and liberty. Here, he talked much about politics and exclaimed that Ronald Reagan was doing a great job because he believed that Reagan loved individual freedom.
  • Amir graduates High School

    In the Summer of 1983, "Amir graduated high school at the age of twenty" (131). This was his starting point for his career. Here, he wanted to be an author because he found in high school, and later in college, that it was his desire to go into literature.
  • Amir goes to Hazarajat

    Amir "went to Hazarajat to find Hassan" for many reasons (203). However, the main reason was to find Hassan because he was lonely and guilty. He thinks that he feels lonely, but what he is really feeling the most is guilt. He feels guilty for letting Hassan go, so he went to Hazzarajat to rid himslef of that guilt.
  • Soviet Union leaves Afghanistan

    The Soviet Union decidied to leave Afghanistan "after talks moderated by the United Nations, the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989"(New York Times).
  • Pakistan helkps Taliban

    The main reason for why the Taliban grew was because the "Pakistani intelligence officers began funneling armys, money and supplies" to them (New York Times).
  • Taliban grows

    The taliban was growing because "by the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east"(New York Times).
  • Taliban helps out Osama Bin Laden

    The Taliban supported Bin Laden becuase they "provided a haven for Mr. Bin Laden..in May 1996" (new York Times).
  • Taliban takes over Afghanistan

    The Taliban was so strong, by "1996 [they] had taken control of Afghanistan" (New York Times).
  • Talaban kill Hazaras

    In the year of 1998, the Taliban "massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif. This massacre shows the discrimination that was waiting to occur in Afghanistan. Before this incident, it was just words and insults, but after it, the real horrors of racism sprung out. This massacre was another reason for why there was a downfall in Afghanistan
  • Amir goes to Peshawar

    Amir went to Afghanistan to see Rahim Khan because "[he was] quite ill" (217). Amir felt that Rahim Khan was the only part of his old life he had left. He needed to see him in order to remember his old life which he had loved so much until the incident with Hassan.
  • Assef fights Amir

    When Amir is stuck in a room with Assef, Assef threatens him and says that "when [the fight] is all done, only one of [them] will walk out of this room alive" (287). Assef turned into a sodistic man, craving violence and torture. At this moment, Amir remembers the hard times he had living in Kabul. His poor childhood was brought back to him when he had seen Assef.
  • Amir brings Sohrab to America

    The two of them "arrived home...oon a warm day in August 2001" (357). At this time, Amir feels better about the relationship with himself and Hassan. Now, he has atoned for his sin by giving a new life to Hassan's offspring. Amir now has rid himslef of his guilt, and can enjoy his successful life.

    George Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum becuase of "the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001" (New York Times).
  • General Petraeus takes charge of United States Central Command

    In the October of 2008, "General Petraeus...had taken charge of United States Central Command" (New York Times).
  • President Obama announced his plan to diploy troops

    On Dec 1, 2009 "Mr. Obama announced his plan to dplor 30,000 additional troops" (New York Times).
  • Hamis Karzai was leader of Afghanistan

    In the December of 2001 "Hamid Karzai...was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him leader of the country"(New York Times).
