  • Hassan gets surgery

    Dr. Kumar said, "my job is to fix things on people's bodies." (45) As a birthday gift for Hassan, Baba got a surgeon to fix Hassan's hip. This connects back to moments in Afghanistan because during times of war lots of children get body parts taken of or amputated. In this case, Hassan had a bad hip that needed to be fixed.
  • Hassan gets Raped

    Assef said, "It's just a Hazara," (75) Assef says this to Wali before he rapes Hassan. This shows how Hazaras were treated and were seen as inferior to other people in Afghanistan.
  • Soviet Union Invades

    The New York Times writes, "...Afghanistan, has known little peace since 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded."
  • Russians Invade Afghanistan

    Amir recalls "grim-faced Russians soldiers patrolling the sidewalks," (113) This shows how Amir remembers when the Russians came to Afghanistan. This relates to what was happening at the time to Afghanistan because it gives a sense of what was happening during the war.
  • Ali Dies

    Ali "had been killed by a land mine..." (206) This is significant because it shows how violent Afghanistan can be. This relates to moments in Afghanistan because it shows how easy you can get hurt.
  • Soviet Troops Leave Afghanistan

    The final Soviet troops cleared out of Afghanistan on "February 1989." (2)
  • Russians Leave Afghanistan

    Amir recalls "the year that the cold war ended," (184) Amir publishes his first book and thinks about current events happening in Afghanistan. It shows that this was the year that the Russians left Afghanistan.
  • Taliban is growing in Afghanistan

    The New York Times writes, "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east."
  • 9/11 Attacks

    The US has been in Afghanistan since "after the Sept. 11 attacks by Al Qaeda." (1)

    The New York Times writes, "Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops."
