The Camel was credited with shooting down 1,294 enemy aircraft, more than any other Allied fighter planes

It was the first operational close-support and reconnaissance fighter aircraft with vertical/short takeoff and landing capabilities and the only truly successful V/STOL design out of many that were made in that time.
