Kingston Aviation Timeline

  • Sopwith Camel

    Sopwith Camel
The Sopwith camel was the main plane for Britain in world war one, and was made by the Sopwith Aviation Company in Kingston, were it was manufactured and used in the war. It was the most popular plane in the war as it was not the most amazing plane but was not very costly either, which means it was the ideal plane for an average fighter pilot. It was a massive improvement from the previous triplane as it was a lot less heavy as it only weighed 977 lbs.
  • Sopwith Camel continued

When comparing the Sopwith Canel to its German rival plane the Fokker Dr1 as it is faster as the german plane can only go at 115 mph but the Camel can go faster, which is an adanatge. One disadvantage would be that the Fokker can go up double the heightof the Camel in half the time which would be a disadvantage. The ammuntion of both these planes is quite equal as both shoot between the propellers and are even.
  • Sopwith Camel continued 2

When comparing the sopwith camel to other British planes I would say that it is average for its time, but is quite disappointing when comparing it to the the Hawker Hurricane which was only made about twenty years later yet it have more than double the maximum speed of the Sopwith Camel and a lot better standard of ammunition. Also it carried more bombs and was a single wing plane so that it would carry less weight from that perspective. So overall, the Camel is an average fighter plane.
  • Sopwith Snipe

The Sopwith 7F.1 Snipe was a British single-seat biplane fighter of the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was designed and built by the Sopwith Aviation Company during the First World War, and came into squadron service a few weeks before the end of that conflict, in late 1918. It was not very fast and its top speed was only 121 mph. It had 2 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine guns and 4 25 lb (11 kg) bombs. This was quite good weaponry and allowed the plane to be a good, prepared bomber-fighter plane.
  • Sopwith Snipe continued

The Snipe was not a fast aircraft by the standards of its time, but its excellent climb and manoeuvrability made it a good match for contemporary German fighters.
It was selected as the standard postwar single-seat RAF fighter and the last examples were not retired until 1926. The Fokker Dr.I was quite alike this plane, they would were bi-planes and both had around the same top speed. However the Sopwith Snipe beats the Fokker since it has better manouverability since it is tail heavy and is

much lighter which allows it to be more agile and fast.
  • Hawker Hurricane

    Hawker Hurricane
The Hawker Hurricane was a strong powerful fighter plane in WW2 and was the main plane for the British as it took out the most enemies overall. It was used by the RAF and was built by the Hawker Aviation Company. It was a good all rounded single winged plane that could travel at 34o mph which was nearly double the speed that the Sopwith Camel in WW2 travelled.

It was developed many times especially in the compartment of ammunition as more weapons were added as time passed. When comparing this plane to other British planes it is average for its speed and weapon, but it a whole lot better than the Sopwith Camel which had half the speed and power that the hurricane had. So overall, the Hurricane was an average fighter plane that could have been improved when compared to the Messerschmitt.
  • Hawker Hurricane continued

Its rival was the Messerschmitt, which was also a very innovative German fighter plane as it was faster than the Hurricane as it travelled at 398 mph, but both had equal strength in ammunition as they both had machine guns and cannons as well as a good load of bombs that they could carry. Also the Messerschmitt was lighter and had a more powerful power plant which shows that the Hurricane could not the match the competition put up by the very advanced and good German plane.
  • Hawker Typhoon

    Hawker Typhoon
The Hawker Typhoon was able to hold one crew member and had a wingspan of 12.67 metres.
It had great weapons which consisted of 4 20mm Hispano MK cannons, 8 air-to-ground rockets and 2 500 lb bombs.
A high speed of 412 mph and a Napier Sabre 2,200 horsepower engine .
3,317 were made, used as a fighter-bomber and had stopped being made in 1945, at the end of the war.
It's service ceiling is 35,200 ft and weighs 8,840 lb when empty and 11,400 lb when loaded.
It is a decent plane when compared...

Unlike the Hawker Typhoon, the Spad S.VII was desgined purely for attacking in air and dodging, it was basically designed quite wildly. The Hawker Typhoon took into account reliability, range and safety, whereas the Spad S.VII has one of the worst reliability of all planes ever created.

to other planes that were not made in Kingston such as the Spad S.VII which is considerably older , 1916, and slower at 192 kmh. Howver the Spad S.VII has appeared to be sturdier and steadier which makes it easier to man the gun. This could be an opinion based statement since only some of the soldiers who flew it thought this. The Spad S.VII developed over time significantly since it started with a 160 hp engine then moved onto a 210 hp engine which helped in dogfights and acceleration.
  • Hawker Sea fury continued

as the Fokker Dr.I which is a triplane that was a World War I fighter aircraft built by Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. It became renowned as the aircraft in which Manfred von Richthofen gained his last 19 victories, and in which he was killed on 21 April 1918. It was not a very fast plane and its top speed was only 115 mph(185 kmh). This is a huge difference to the Hawker sea fury. Even though the Fokker Dr.I was more controllable, the Hawker Sea Fury was better since it gave more neccessary speed.
  • Hawker Sea Fury

    Hawker Sea Fury
It carried one crew member, but was quite spacious and comfortable. The Hawker Sea Fury was a British fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by Hawker. It was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy, and also one of the fastest production single piston-engined aircraft ever built. It developed during the Second World War, the Sea Fury entered service two years after the war ended. The Hawker sea furey had a top speed of about 740 kmh! When comparing that to planes such
  • Hawker Harrier

    Hawker Harrier
The Hawker Harrier was a very advanced fighter plane for its time, and was one of the fastest fighter planes of its age. It could travel and a massive 735 mph, with its Rolls-Royce Pegasus 101 turbofan engine. . It was made by the Hawker Aviation Company, and was built and developed at around 1969. It was mainly known for its ability to hover in the air vertically and horizontally, which shows that it was very maneuverable. It was a key plane for RAF before the Americans brought it from them.
  • Hawker Harrier contined

It had developed from its first generation as there were two generations of Hawker Harrier as it was redesigned and was then more popular and it had no rival planes. It had lots of advanced ammunitions including rocket pods, missiles and even two drop tanks. When comparing this plane to other planes from the past such as the Hurricane and Sea Fury as it was made a few decades before the Harrier can be said to be far superior compared to them as it was a lot faster.
