    Jayavarman II starts the Khmer Empire

    Civil war and chaos in Khmer

    There are three kings in the Khmer Empire who claim the throne. The first, Udayadityavarman I, dies in a civil war. The other two, Jayavarman and Suryavarman I claim the throne.

    Vijaya is taken

    Suryavarman invades Champa. He defeated the king and gained control of Champa's capital: Vijaya.

    Khmer is looted

    Led by Jaya Indravarman IV, the Khmer Empire is looted. During this Tribuvanadityavarman loses rule over Khmer Empire because he is killed.

    Jayavarman VII defeats Chams

    Jayavarman VII defeats Chams and extends the Khmer Empire's territory to its furthest extent.

    Ta Prohm

    Following the death of Jayavarman VII's mother's death. Jayavarman VII has Ta Prohm in her name. It was used a monastry and university.

    Angkor Wat construction

    Angkor Wat is a temple complex that was built by Suryavarman II and took less than 100 years to build. It is much larger than the largest cathedral but the cathedrals often took 100s of year to finish being built. The temple complex is surounded by a moat. When it was finished being built it was a Hindu temple, but Khmer Empire later changed its main religion to Buddhism and so it became a Buddhist temple.

    Angkor Thom

    Jayavarman VII orders Angkor Thom, which means great city, to be built. It was huge in size and the last and most enduring of the Angkor cities.

    Jayavarman VIII

    Jayavarman VIII brings back Buddhism and has the Buddhist temples destroyed, ruins the image of Buddhism. Makes Hinduism the main religion.

    Thai attacks Angkor

    The Thai army attacks Angkor and the Khmer Empire ruled, by Barom Reachea II, is abandoned because it is indefensible.
