  • Conception

    Conception
    The sperm and egg unite after sexual intercourse. Sperm that enter the uterus quickly swim into the fallopian tubes. If an ovum is present, the sperm swarm the ovum and try to break through the surface. Once the ovum has been fertilized, it attaches to the wall of the uterus.
  • Month 1

    Month 1
    Changes in baby:
    - size of pin head
    - heart is the size of a poppy seed & has begun beating
    - egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus Changes in mother:
    - missed period
    - no other noticable signs
  • Period: to

    First Trimester

    all organs & muscles have formed and are starting to function.
  • Period: to

    Period of the Zygote

    video (up to 2 weeks) lasts from conception until the fertilized egg is implanted in the mother's uterus
  • Period: to

    Period of Embryo

    Lasts from 2 weeks after conception until 2 months after conception. (all organs form, amniotic sac & fluid formed)
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    Changes in baby:
    - embryo is 1 inch long
    - eyes, ears & limbs are developing
    - veins are visible
    - heart has divided into left & right chambers Changes in mother:
    - swelling of breasts
    - increased urination due to pressure on the bladder
    - "morning sickness"
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    Changes in baby:
    - 2 inches long, fully formed
    - has begun kicking & swallowing
    - all organs and muscles have formed and are starting to function Changes in mother:
    - breasts become fuller & firmer (may ache)
    - nausea, fatigue
    - abdomen becomes slightly larger & weight gain may total 2-4 pounds
    - frequent urination continues

    Period of the Fetus

    lasts from 2 months of pregnancy until birth.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    Changes in baby:
    - lanugo
    - heartbeat can be heard clearly
    - may feel baby's first kick
    - size is about 3 inches long, weighs 1 ounce Changes in mother:
    - appetite increases
    - morning sickness should be gone
    - abdomen is continuing to grow
  • Period: to

    Second Trimester

    baby has hair, eyebrows and eyelashes.
    the heartbeat can be heard through the stethoscope
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    Changes in baby:
    - vernix caseosa begins to form
    - baby is about 6 1/2 - 7 inches long
    - weighs 4-5 ounces Changes in mother:
    -abdomen becomes apparent
    - increased size may affect posture
    - slight fetal movements felt
    - fetal heartbeat can be heard using a stethoscope
  • 6 Months

    6 Months
    Changes in baby:
    - eyelids & eyebrows are visible
    - baby's lungs are filled with amniotic fluid & he/she starts breathing motions
    - baby can hear
    - 8-10 inches long & weighs about 8-12 ounces Changes in mother:
    - fetal movements are sensed (may be visible)
    - weight gain may total 10-12lbs at the beginning
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    Changes in baby:
    - 10-12 inches long
    - 1 1/2 - 2 lbs
    - fingernails cover fingertips Changes in mother:
    - posture is affected by increased size
  • Period: to

    Third Trimester

    Baby becomes fatter in preparation for birth, (also turns upside down) becomes less active due to lack of room.
  • 8 Month

    8 Month
    Changes in baby:
    - fetus is gaining about half a pound per week
    - baby is getting fat
    - has probably turned head down in preparation for birth
    - weighs 2 1/2 - 3 lbs
    - 14-16 inches long Changes in mother:
    - discomfort from increased size of belly
    - backache, fatique, leg cramps, shortness of breath
    - fetal kicks may disturb moms rest
    - weight gain totals about 18-20 lb @ start of month
  • 9 Months

    9 Months
    Changes in baby:
    - fetus is 5-6 lb & measures between 17-18 in
    - he becomes more crowded, he becomes less active Changes in mother:
    - “lightening” felt as fetus drops into the pelvis and decreases pressure on mother’s organs
    - false labor pains may be experienced
    - total weight gain 25-35 lb
    - other discomfort will continue
  • Birthdate

    Birthdate
    After 9 months, the baby is born.
