The mother will feel what is called lightening. This occurs when the baby settles deep into the pelvis near birth and it causes pressure on the woman's upper abdomen.
-
- The "show"- when the mucus that plugs the uterus dissolves and there are a few drops of blood or pinkish vaginal stain.
- The amniotic sac breaks but in some occasions the doctor has to break it for you.
- Contractions- when the uterus contracts and pushes the fetus agaisnt the cervix.
-
- Contractions occur at regular intervals
- Woman would use coping exercises such as breathing exercises or walking.
- Woman would receive pain medication if she wanted it.
- The baby moves into the lower pelvis.
- The cervix would become fully dilated to 10 centimeters in diameter.
-
- The contractions push the baby through the pelvis and out of the vagina, or birth canal.
- Safe for the woman to push at this point.
- Relaxin allows tissue to stretch and moves apart the pelvic bones and also allows the walls of the vagina to strech so the baby can pass.
- Doctor may widen the opening with a surgical cut called an episiotomy.
- As the head emerges, the doctor may provide gentle support guide the baby out.
-
- A few contractions might occur and may give the mother a desire to push and this helps the placenta to separate from the uterine wall.
- The mother will then give birth to the placenta.
