Kaylee Kruschwitz- Progression of Labor to Birth

  • Beginning Labor

    Beginning Labor
The mother will feel what is called lightening. This occurs when the baby settles deep into the pelvis near birth and it causes pressure on the woman's upper abdomen.
  • Early Signs of Labor

    Early Signs of Labor
    1. The "show"- when the mucus that plugs the uterus dissolves and there are a few drops of blood or pinkish vaginal stain.
    2. The amniotic sac breaks but in some occasions the doctor has to break it for you.
    3. Contractions- when the uterus contracts and pushes the fetus agaisnt the cervix.
  • First Stage of Labor

    First Stage of Labor
    1. Contractions occur at regular intervals
    2. Woman would use coping exercises such as breathing exercises or walking.
    3. Woman would receive pain medication if she wanted it.
    4. The baby moves into the lower pelvis.
    5. The cervix would become fully dilated to 10 centimeters in diameter.
  • Second Stage of Labor

    Second Stage of Labor
    1. The contractions push the baby through the pelvis and out of the vagina, or birth canal.
    2. Safe for the woman to push at this point.
    3. Relaxin allows tissue to stretch and moves apart the pelvic bones and also allows the walls of the vagina to strech so the baby can pass.
    4. Doctor may widen the opening with a surgical cut called an episiotomy.
    5. As the head emerges, the doctor may provide gentle support guide the baby out.
  • Third Stage of Birth

    Third Stage of Birth
    1. A few contractions might occur and may give the mother a desire to push and this helps the placenta to separate from the uterine wall.
    2. The mother will then give birth to the placenta.
