Native Hawaiians settle
Native Hawaiians settle on Kaho' olawe and start to move from the South Pacific to Hawai‘i. Kaho' olawe is deticated to Kanaloa, Hawaiian deity of the ocean. -
GOATS!!!
Goats are introduced on the island of Kaho' olawe as a gift. These "gifts" would soon eat everything on the island and leave it desolate. -
Penal Colony
Some adult men are sent to a penal colony on Kaho‘olawe for various offenses and crimes. This Law, however, was re-pealed later in 1853. -
Out of control Livestock
The Hawaiian government issues the first of many ranch leases for the island. But the un keept Livestock, like goats and cows, started to speed up the erosion on the island. -
Bombing range
After the events of peal harbor, the u.s. declares Kaho' olawe as a bombing range to test and fire weapons. -
Keys to Kaho' olawe
President Dwight D. Eisenhower grants the military full use of the island. But he expects Kaho' olawe to be returned in “suitable habitation” when the military is done. -
Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana
PKO (Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana) trys to stop the bombing by begining a series of occupations of the island. They also file suit in a Federal District Court to stop the Navy’s bombing activities. The Federal District Court orders that the historic sites on the island be protected from the us navy. -
An Understanding
A consent decree is signed between the U.S. Navy and the PKO. This document states that the us Navy help in soil conservation, revegetation, and goat eradication programs. -
Bombing stops
As a result of PKO's actions Presedent George Bush Sr. orders a Hult to all bombing on the island of Kaho' olawe. The Navy was no longer aloud to use the island as a bombing range ever again. -
50% clear
The island of Kaho' olawe is now 50% clear of all it's bombs both in the water and on land thanks to the efforts of KIRC. -
100% clear!!!
The island of Kaho' olawe is now 100% clear of all its bombs in and out of the water. KIRC can now begin to repar the erosion damage on Kaho' olawe. -
Erosion Gone
All Erosion caused by the events of the past is now healed. The Island can now also produce freash water thanks to steam compresion technology. -
Vegetation Restored
Kaho' olawe is now full of plant life once again. All harmfull plants like kiawe, have been removed from the island and replaced with plants found on Maui. -
Back and better than ever!!!
Thanks to the efforts of KIRC, the island of Kaho' olawe has been fully restored back to its former glory. Kaho' olawe is set to soon become a Federal reserve with private visits aproved by KIRC only.
