    The Missouri Compromise was only a temporary solution to the slavery issue. The Tallmadge amendment only added to the problem becaue it stated "further introduction of slavery or involuntary servitude prohibited...and chrildren born within that sais state.. shall be free at the age of 25 years"

    War of Mexico and Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    The northerns were upset withthe War of Mexico because they accused it of just southerners seeking more land to spread slavery into. The northers also hated Polk for supporting it with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

    Wilmot's Proviso
    Wilmot's Proviso showed just how strongly oppostion to slavery was in the north. It suggested to ban slavery in all the land aquired from Mexico. It sperated the north and the south because the south feared that as soon as northerns gained control of Senate slavery would be restricted, then abolished.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Fugitive Slave Act denied accused runaway slaves trial by jury. Sometimes even freed slaves would be taken south because special comminsioners were aid five dollars to say they were free and ten dollars to say they were not. Therefore, northerns were very upset because southerns could claim slaves in the north back down to the south. This was when the peak of the underground railroad to Canada occured as well.

    Uncles Tom's Cabn
    Hrriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin upset northerners and southerners because it was a story about slavery in the south. Southerners thought that it was a very exagerated story and decipicted a slave's worse than it really was. Northerns became more aware of the life of a slave and pushed more for abolition.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was an enslaved African American bought by a doctor in Missouri. His owner died and Scott claimed he was free since he was temporarily in a free state and sued for freedom and the Supreme Court rulled agaisnt him.

    John Brown, 16 men, 2 of Brown's sons, and 5 African American. They were quickly defeated by local citizend and federal troops and were hung to death.

    South did not trust Lincoln Democratic party nominated Douglass, southern party nominated Brechinridge Abraham Lincoln and he barely wins.
