    When Joseph Smith was 14 years old, he wanted to know which church to join and, as a result, asked God in earnest prayer.     Joseph began translating again in 1829 and most of the current text of the Book of Mormon was translated over a period of three months between April and June of that year. During those months, his clerk was Oliver Cowdery, a Vermont schoolteacher who had heard of the Book of Mormon while staying at the home of Joseph's parents in Palmyra. Called by God in a vision, Cowdery traveled to Harmony to meet Joseph Smith and investigate further.

    The murder of Joseph Smith Jr., founder and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, occurred on June 27, 1844.
