    President Kennedy authorized a covert mission to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro with agroup of 1,500 U.S. trained Cuban refugees. This event was called the Bay of Pigs Invasion.   • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Discovering that the Soviet Union had sent nuclear missiles to Cuba, Kennedy sent out ships to blockade the island. He swore he would defend the United States at any cost. Finally, after many of the most tense days in history the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles in retrun for Kenney's promise not to invade Cuba and to remove American missile from Turkey.

    During his first two years in office, President Kennedy had been reluctant to push ahead with civil rights legislation as a result of his narrow election victory. And what he was doing instead wasn't good enough for African Americans experiencing dicrimination. In February he sent a message to Congress, but hadn't heard anything by June.

    Eight months after the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy successfully negotiated the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty with Great Britain and the Soviet Union, helping to ease Cold War tensions.
