    My First Birthday
My journey through life as well as my introduction to literature of all forms begins.
  • Favorite Childhood Book

    Favorite Childhood Book
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown was my favorite book as a child. I have countless memories of lying in bed with my mom while she read this story to me. Every time we read it we found new and exciting themes or pictures to discuss. It always had the power to make me very happy and calm before falling asleep.
  • When I Started Reading Independently

    When I Started Reading Independently
When I was four years old, my grandparents gave me a variety of books called Bob Books, written by Bobby Lynn Maslen. Bob Books were very simple with colorful pictures and few words on each page. They were the first series that my parents encouraged me to delve into on my own. I remember sitting and marveling at each page trying to sound out the letters of the various short words and feeling so accomplished when I finished reading an entire page.
  • When I've Disliked Reading

    When I've Disliked Reading
When I was younger, I hated reading. My parents would nag me to read any form of literature, but I would always rebel and watch TV instead. They would stress to me the importance of reading, its ever-present role in society, and how it provided them with so much satisfaction. This led to their favorite game, a compromise of reading, wherein I had to circle all of a particular letter in a magazine article. While I didn't realize it at the time, this fun "game" tricked me into actually reading,
  • The Book I Read Because Everyone Else Was Reading It

The Book I Read Because Everyone Else Was Reading It
When I was approximately thirteen years old, all of my friends started talking about their favorite book series called The Clique by Lisi Harrison. While I was not a big reader at the time, I had heard such great things about the book series that I decided that I too should read it. My favorite part about reading the books was not the literature itself but rather the conversations that I had with my friends over our lunch period about the characters and themes.
  • The Most Difficult Book I've Ever Read

The Most Difficult Book I've Ever Read
Last school year, my English class read the book entitled The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. While I really liked the book, I constantly used to walk into class confused. I always found that Mr. Kaplan had discovered numerous hidden plot elements in the text that went right over my head. In the end, after our many diverse conversations, I decided that I really enjoyed reading The Grapes of Wrath, but it was a difficult book to understand completely.
  • My Favorite Preteen/Adult Book

    My Favorite Preteen/Adult Book
The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is one my favorite books to date. After watching and loving the movie, I knew that I had to read the book. While I am sometimes a slow reader, I could not put this particular book down. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the plot and learning about the many characters and what made them the way that they were. I've now read the book twice and seen the movie three times, evidencing that I really enjoy the story.
  • The Book I Read When No One Was Looking

The Book I Read When No One Was Looking
When I found Jonathan Tropper's This Is Where I Leave You in my basement this past summer my mother told me not to read it because it isn't "sophisticated" reading. Weeks ago, I remembered how funny the book looked and decided that I should read it anyway before going to bed so that my mother couldn't tell. I ended up loving the quick wit and ease of the book, even though it wasn't the most intelligent read.
  • My Favorite Wasteful and Trashy Reading

My Favorite Wasteful and Trashy Reading
To this day, People Magazine has been among my favorite forms of literature. Every Thursday I look forward to coming home and finding the latest article in my mailbox. While I know it is not sophisticated reading, or the stories even true in many cases, reading People Magazine allows me to escape my own reality and brings me comfort and happiness that I can always rely on.
  • The Genre That I Would Like To Read More Of

The Genre That I Would Like To Read More Of
I have always loved reading poetry. While I don't do it often, I find that when I do I feel calm and content. When I was I was younger I used to love to read poetry by Shel Silverstein, such as his work entitled Where the Sidewalk Ends. It has been a while since I've read great poetry like that of Shel Silverstein and I would really like to do more poetry reading in my future.
  • The Platform Where Most Of My Reading Takes Place

The Platform Where Most Of My Reading Takes Place
Recently, I have developed a true and unique interest in reading. I not only read the literature required of me in school, but also always have an additional book that I choose to read on my own. Typically, I read my own personal book right before bed because it allows me to feel a routine closure to my day. If I am really into the book that I am reading though, I will read it whenever I get a spare second. Even with personal literature, I always have a pen and highlighter out to annotate.
