    Jane (age 2) Learns her favorite word is no. In Erikson's second stage, autonomy versus shame and doubt, Jane is learning to be independent. Jane wants to do things on her own because her parents give her healthy boundaries. Jane has no shame or guilt and is confident to do things independently.

    Jane (age 4) plans her own breakfast menu. She has made a menu and invited her family for a special treat. In Erikson's third stage, initiative versus guilt, children learn to plan things out with encouragement from parents. This allows the child to have a sense of purpose.

    Jane's (age 10) school has a science fair each year. This year Jane worked extra hard. She had help from her teacher and family. Erikson's fourth stage, industry versus inferiority, kids learn to accomplish tasks to become successful. Because Jane won a prize for her project, she will experience competence.
