  • The "Iron Curtain"

    The "Iron Curtain"
    Winston Churchill made the metaphor for the areas under Soviet Union control, it represented Europe being seperated by an iron curtain which communist dominated countries on one side and the other side were democratic views. This event was significant because it showed the struggles between the communist countries and the democratic countries.   • Berlin Blockade/ Airlift

    Berlin Blockade/ Airlift
    The United States and England began an airlift for about a year which the military air drop supplied food and packages that people in West Berlin needed because of the starvation from the leader. This event was important because it shed some light on the Americans making them seem like the good people for helping the starving people in West Berlin, they tried to stop the communism.   • Red Scare

    Red Scare
    Joseph McCarthy performed a second red scare speech in West Virginia which claimed that there was a list of people in the US state depart or in army that were card carrying communist. Spies in the US worked for the Soviets. This event was significant because it made Americans anit-communist.   • Korean War

    Korean War
    North Korean troops began to attack South Korea in June. The US and The UN sent troops to fight against the North Korean forces. The war ended in 1953. This even was important because it was the beginning of the fight for power between the two countries and is still a conflict today.   • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This was a supreme court decison to remove all seperation of colored children in public school and it would be ruled unconstitutional.   • The Space Race

    The Space Race
    The space race was a race between the Soviet Union and the US to be the better hand in sending objects into space. The Soviet Union started the space race by sending 2 satellites into the orbit that were both powered by rockets. This event was significant because it was the start of sending things into space, the US was scared of the possibility space made weapons from the Soviets.   • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    John F. Kennedy ordered to train Cuban exiles into commandos that would fight againt Cuba as a guerrilla army to take out Fidel Castro. This event was significant because the invasion failed right away which Castro gained more control and closer collaboration with the Soviet Union.     Apollo 11
    The Apollo 11 mission was a success and America had the first ever man to touch the moon. This event was important because Americans went the farthest in the space race, and a big step for the country.     Removal of nuclear missiles in Europe
    President Reagan and Gorbachev got together and resolved the idea to remove all intermediate nuclear missiles from Europe. This soon turned into a treaty which was signed in 1988.     Berlin wall demolished

    Solviet Union abolished
