  • Confederation in Germany formed

    39 German states form the German confederation.

  • Berlin Rioters force Germans to make Constitution

    Berlin rioting forced the German constitutional convention to write a liberal constitution.

  • VIctor Emmanuel II Assumes the role of king of Sardinia

    Italy wanted a strong leader to rule their new empire, and Victor Emmanuel II displayed this trait. In 1849, he was named King of Sardinia.

  • Camillio de Cavour named Prime minister

    Camillio de Cavour is named Prime minister of Sardinia by VIctor Emmanuel II, King of sardinia at the time. He spends much of his time trying to give Sardinia more power.

  • Giuseppe Geribaldi Captures territory

    Geribaldi and a small army of nationalists Capture Sicily. Known as the red shirts they traveled North and agreed to unite Southern areas he had conquered with Sardinia. He let Victor Emmanuel take control, by stepping aside.

  • Wilhelm I Chooses New Leader

    Wilhelm I succeeded Frederick William to the throne.

  • New Prime Minster selected

    Wilhelm selected Otto Von Bismarck as prime minister.

  • Prussia and Austria and alliance

    Prussia and Austria formed an alliance, and went to war against Denmark. They won two border province, Holstein and Schleswig.

  • Venetia becomes part of Italy

    Venetia + Venice becomes unified with Italy in 1866.

  • 7 Weeks War

    Bismarck instigated Austria, causing them to declare war against Prussia. Austria suffered a humliating defeat. Austria lost the region of Venetia, which was given to Italy because they had accepted Prussians annexation of more German territory.

  • Italians capture last of papal states

    Italian forces took over last part of Papal states. Along with this Rome, became part of Italians control, and became the capital.

  • Franco-Prussian War

    Bismarck called up the French ambassador, and made up a story about him. The French reacted to Bismarck's deception by declaring war. Prussian's captured 83,000 French including Napoleon III. Parisians were forced to surrender due to starvation and hunger.

  • Wilhelm I crowned

    King Wilhelm I crowned Kaiser (emperor) of Prussia. Called themselves second reich.

  • Aftermath of 7 Weeks war

    Remaining states of North Germany join the North German Confederation.
